In May of 2020, South Elgin business owner Tim Kolb became disturbed by the unjust inhuman racial events that were happening across the United States of America. As a Caucasian male, Tim felt the need to reach out to his friends of color to have meaningful conversations about race in this country. Seeking to understand their life experiences, Tim realized that his friends were facing many challenges that he did not.
Together they decided that something needed to be done about racial inequality. At last, the vision was born! Tim reached out to community members from various sectors and areas of expertise including business, government, education, and social & human services to facilitate honest conversations about race, inclusion, and equity.
Through these bold discussions, the R.I.S.E. (Race. Inclusion. Support. Equity.) committee was formed! The group started by analyzing the Village of South Elgin and began to build strategies to strengthen racial equity and inclusion.
R.I.S.E. America, a not-for-profit organization, was officially created with the state of Illinois and is committed to advocating for an environment of inclusiveness that acts toward eliminating inequities by promoting fair policies and practices to improve the educational, social, and economic prosperity in America.
